Heavy rains cause landslide

Heavy rains destabilized the land in the walls around the highway connecting Toluca and Temascaltepec, burying cars late on Thursday night.

Ten bodies of victims were found by rescue teams on Friday and one more on Saturday.  Local authorities continue looking for other victims.

The avalanche of mud swept away at least ten cars.  Tons of earth and mud buried the victims inside the cars.

Dogs have been brought in to help the workers, according to local police.

The landslide, which spread out over some 50 meters, occurred after 3 days of continued rain.

An unseasonably rainy weather caused floods throughout the central states of the country.  There are more than 30 people dead, and others have disappeared in three states. The floods have affected more than 20,000 people.

Auhorities declared a state of emergency due to the significant damage caused by rains in the Pacific coast of Michoacan, where more than twenty people have died.

Officials said that at least 2,000 homes have been flooded after heavy rains dumped over a meter of rain on the sleepy Mexican port of Tuxpan this week.

At least 25 municipalities have been hit by the historic storms that have caused rivers to burst over their banks.

The town of Tuxpan was hardest hit, with at least 180 families moved into shelters.

Meanwhile, in Mexico City, officials declared an emergency as there are more than 20,000 people affected by floods.

In the capital, over 650 families have already been displaced by the storms.
