The storm hit the city as commuters were getting ready to head back home, but for many it proved a complicated journey.

Victorian authorities urged drivers to exercise caution when driving, as floods damaged roads and infrastructure across the city.

Some areas of the city received around 40 millimetres of rain.

Rescue workers were up all night as they received about 700 calls for flash flooding, property damage and fallen trees.

Local media reported that authorities were trying to restore electricity to some 2,000 residents in and around Melbourne.
